"I'm out for a good time - all the rest is propaganda!"
If you're out for a good time for a good cause in Nottingham then this is a date for your diaries. Friday 3rd June will see a special commemorative screening of the classic Nottingham film 'Saturday Night and Sunday Morning' written by local legend Alan Sillitoe.
All proceeds raised on the night will go to the Alan Sillitoe Statue Fund, a campaign supported by both Nottingham universities, the council and literary groups in Nottingham, who are working to raise the £50,000 needed to build the statue in Lenton Abbey, the location of Alan's birth in Manton Crescent. "The campaign has been going for a year now and we've had so much local support, people are contributing in whatever way they can and that includes letting out spaces for our fund-raising events and printing out flyers for free," says local writer and campaign supporter James Walker. Further plans include literary walks and an iphone app for Nottingham taking in all the locations mentioned in the book and film.
The film screening will be taking place at Antenna on Beck Street in Nottingham, an exciting new media centre for people working in Nottingham's creative industries. Alan's son David Sillitoe will be also attending the event along with award-winning novelist Nicola Monaghan and local band Blue Yonder. Doors open at 7.30pm-11pm and ticket prices are £5 waged, £2 concessions.
Confidentially, we can't wait to attend this event and embrace our own inner Arthur Seaton whilst helping raise funds for the Sillitoe Statue- a great idea, fully deserved and long overdue!
